I can’t explain exactly why, but for the past 3 weeks, I have been eating chips and dip nonstop. Seriously, it’s officially a problem. It all started when I hosted a virtual wine night for my sorority sisters and I. Nothing compliments wine, like wine snacks, and my wine snacks for the night were #TacoTuesday inspired. My fiesta baked tortilla chips, black bean & corn salsa, & guacamole were the star of the show… That is until I brought out the wine.
My wine pairing decision was anything but easy. I was torn between pairing my snacks with Riesling or Sauvignon Blanc. Due to the high acidity of my snacks, thanks to the lime and tomatoes, I knew I needed to pair my snacks with a wine that was just as acidic. Both Riesling and Sauvignon Blanc were equipped to step up to the challenge. So I, a firm believer of no wine left behind, purchased both bottles and compared the results.
Although I have sipped both wines numerous times in the past, this was the first time I actually took note of how each wine influenced the flavors in my spicy and acidic snacks. On one hand, the Riesling provided a cool and refreshing take, on the other, the Sauvignon Blanc brought out all the spicy flavors that were otherwise mellowed out in my snacks. See my in-depth comparison video below.
So my take, if you’re having a party, whip up my Mexican inspired recipes, grab both bottles, explain to your guest the influence of each wine pairing, and let your guests have at it!
